The Flight of the Eagle at Pietrapertosa

The Flight of the Eagle is a traditional event that takes place every year in Basilicata, specifically in the town of Pietrapertosa, situated in the province of Potenza.

The event involves a golden eagle – with a wingspan of up to two and a half metres – flying from Pietrapertosa Castle to the nearby village of Castelmezzano.

The flight is performed by a professional falconer who releases the eagle from the castle.

During the flight, the eagle soars over the gorge between the two towns, offering spectators a breathtaking view of the Lucanian Dolomites, a majestic mountainous landscape that surrounds the area.

The tradition of the Flight of the Eagle dates back centuries and has its roots in local folklore and legends.

It is said that during the era of brigandage, the brigands used the eagle as a messenger to communicate with one another, making use of its power and agility in flight.

Today, the event has become a very popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all over the world who wish to witness this unique spectacle.

As well as the eagle flight, the festival also features cultural events, artistic performances and live shows.

‘Il Volo dell’Aquila’ is a way of promoting the natural beauty of the Basilicata and to promote local traditions.
