The Munachich in Colobraro: Legends of Basilicata

The story of Monachicchio is one of the best-known legends in Basilicata. The small village of Colobraro, situated in the province of Matera, is famous for its mysterious and dark history.

Legend has it that a child was born with demonic features, with two horns on his head and a tail. Monachicchio – so named because of his resemblance to a devil – was the object of great fear and superstition amongst the villagers.

Fearing the consequences his presence might bring, his family decided to keep him hidden from everyone. However, they were unable to keep the secret for long, and news of the “Devil of Colobraro” spread rapidly.

People began to believe that Monachicchio was the cause of all the misfortunes afflicting the village, from famines to diseases. It was said that only the child’s death could free Colobraro from its misfortune.

So, a group of people decided to organise an expedition to kill Monachicchio. The boy, however, was warned of the imminent danger and managed to flee into the surrounding woods.

The inhabitants of Colobraro tried in vain to capture him, but the little devil proved to be more cunning and fierce than anyone could have imagined. Some tales tell of nocturnal encounters with Monachicchio, who made people vanish into thin air.

The legend of Monachicchio is intertwined with other tales of demonic and malevolent creatures from Basilicata, creating an air of mystery around the village of Colobraro. Even today, there are tales of encounters with the little devil and of inexplicable events taking place in the village.

Although the legend is still very much alive in the popular culture of Basilicata, there is no concrete evidence of Monachicchio’s existence. Nevertheless, its story remains an indelible part of the region’s oral tradition.
